FanDuel (www.fanduel.com) will be running it’s $100,000 MLB Survivor contest starting tonight. Entry only costs $25, and you can enter up to 100 times. They have already announced that the minimum number of entrants for the contest has already been met, so the fantasy tournament will definitely run. As of the time of writing this, there were a bit fewer than 3,000 entry spots available.
It’s formatted as a salary cap league, which means you will have a lot more freedom to choose the team you want without having to rely upon others in the contest. The league is structured as a one day league would be, but it’s also a survivor contest, which means there will be multiple rounds. Day one starts tonight at 7:00 PM.
The process is pretty simple. You may choose a total of nine players, each from one of the basic positions. There is no DH available. There are a total of eight games to select players from, so 16 total teams. The scoring is basic scoring from FanDuel, so power hitters are rated higher as homeruns are worth 4 points. Pitching is also important in this tournament since a win is worth 4 points and there’s an extra 1 point for each full inning pitched. If there’s an earned run, the pitcher loses a point, so a pitcher with a good chance of winning will get you more points. This places an emphasis on starting pitchers over closers.
Offense is a little trickier. Obviously a power hitter is a good addition, but power is often inconsistent. The catch is that there are points for singles, doubles, and triples, so anyone that is also a consistent hitter will also be worthwhile. Stolen bases are worth 2 points, but this really isn’t something you should focus on since they happen so infrequently. They are worth a lot, but the likelihood of one happening isn’t enough for you to focus on them.
The tournament looks like a lot of fun and the pay out at Fanduel is huge for the entry, so it is definitely worth a look. There’s still time to sign up, even if you don’t yet have an account.
